The Horse and the Fox a Short Story

The Horse and the Fox

Long time ago, a farmer lived in a distant place with a near by stable, who had a horse that had been serving him faithfully; but the horse was now grown too old to work. So would give him nothing more to eat, and said,” I don’t need you anymore, so take you self out of my stable, I shall not take you back until you are as strong as a lion. Then the horse took off.

The poor horse was very sad, and wandered in the woods, seeking for shelter and some food. At that moment a fox met him:” what’s the matter my friend? He said: “Why do you hang you head down and look so lonely?” The horse replied: “my master has abandoned me, he doesn’t need me no more, because I can no longer work for him, unless I can be as strong as a lion, how can I do that?

However, the fox cheered him up and told him that he will help him. He told the horse to lie down and pretend to be dead. The horse did as he was told and the fox went straight to the lion who lives in a cave close by and said to him, “ I saw a dead horse; follow me and you will make an excellent meal.” The lion was delighted, he immediately followed the fox; and they came to the horse, fox said:” you will not be able to eat him comfortably here. The fox said: “I’ll tell you what, I will tie you to his tail so that you can drag him to your den, and eat him.

What the fox told pleased the lion, so he let the fox tie him to the horse. But the fox tied the lion’s legs together. When the work was done the fox signaled the horse: “ YEP YEP!” Then the horse dashed, dragging the lion behind him. The lion was very angry and begun to roar, but the horse didn’t mind it, he just continue to run the his master‘s house.

He was able to drag the lion to his master’s house and said to his master: “Here he is master, the lion himself”. When the master saw his old servant he was delighted and said:” You shall stay in this stable and be well taken care of.” And so the poor old horse had plenty to eat and lived till he died.
